You know that you don't want to be in the same space in 2024, but where exactly would you like to be instead? Without a destination, you will inevitably get lost along the road. After all, it's truly impossible to get where you're going if you don't know where that is.
The first step is figuring out where exactly you're heading...
Ask yourself: what do you actually want?
What does 'success' mean to you?
As a business owner, it can be tempting to answer: lots of money, clients and success... but are those actually your aspirations or simply the things you think you 'should' want? Our world drills the idea into us that success = money = happiness. But what's not commonly considered is the fact that true 'success' can look drastically different for each individual.
Step 1: Redefine 'Success'
For me, true success means family time, beach trips, good food (I am a Taurus, after all...) and feeling in charge of my own life. Starting my own business allows me to make my own schedule, spend more time with family, make it to my little one's school functions, decide who I want to work with, and show up as my truest self – all key pieces to MY version of success. Another business owner could dream about jet-setting around the world for speaking events and appearances... my personal hell.
Acknowledging the fact that your dreams are YOURS and yours alone can be the (not technically needed, but still powerful) permission slip you need to make your own rules and curate your own idea of what success looks like.
Step 2: Visualize this reality
Imagine the absolute dreamiest version of yourself at the end of 2023.
Where would you like to be in your career?
How would you like to feel – in your life, home, business and your body?
Getting crystal clear on this vision of what can (and inevitably will) be, is the key to making it happen. Once you can tap into this dreamy scenario, you can start showing up as the person that's already accomplished these things and finally make them a reality.
Personally, I like to meditate and imagine I already AM that person.
In this space, I take note of how I'm feeling, I scan my body and mind in that scenario and quickly jot key points down after my session. For you it may be a creating a vision board, or describing this ideal self in detail – however you choose to peek into this future you, start to get comfortable knowing and fully embodying how it feels to have these things already under your belt.
Step 3: Make it happen
Break down this big vision in tangible goals.
For example, your dreamy future self may be organized and always on-time to things. Consider what actions that type of person does to make that happen. A great place to start may be buying a new planner, taking time to review your calendar daily, or setting simple reminders up on your phone. Break each goal into small, easy-to-tackle tasks so this big dream feels comfortably obtainable.
I know it can be easy to fall into the pessimistic trap of thinking that since 'the thing' isn't a current reality, that means it never will be. But this simply isn't true!
There have been countless times in your life that your reality has shifted to reflect recent accomplishments – learning to walk, bike or drive for example. In each of these scenarios, you didn't know how to 'do the thing', then something changed, now you do, and it's hard to remember back to when you couldn't.
Applying this logic to even the most intimating of goals can help empower you and remind you that permanent change is always possible.
