Some people may think the age of blogging has come-and-gone, but as a successful online business owner I can speak from experience that blogging ISN’T dead and sharing consistent new (and actually helpful) content can help your business truly flourish!
Keep reading to learn 7 ways you can use blogging to benefit your business…
1. Expand your reach
As we all know, the internet is a crowded place. The chance of people finding your business website can feel like finding a needle in a haystack... that’s why it’s key to provide multiple avenues that lead your people toward what you have to offer.
Blogs are not only a good doorway to expose more people to your content, but they’re also downright vital to establishing yourself as a reputable business! Online, gaining trust of others can be a difficult feat. Establishing yourself as an expert in your field is paramount to having your business be taken seriously. People need to know, like and trust you before investing in your goods or services. A blog is a great place to start warming people up to who you are and what you offer.
2. Show your knowledge, your skills, and your passion for your field of expertise.
We’ve all seen the “experts” online. For example, if you stumble upon a designer’s blog, but all they seem to post about is Canva and Photoshop, then by common-sense standards, they aren’t a design “expert”. Maybe in those specific fields they could claim expertise, but they won’t (and should'n’t) attract readers that need a higher level of design work.
A true expert of their field understands the difficulties of their audience and customers and speaks to the solutions of these problems, while also discussing things related to their zone of genius.
Another great example of how blogging can boost your business is how it can increase the traffic on your website. We all want to bring those numbers up! A blog written with the right wording about a common issue can pop-up in someone’s search online that didn’t even realize they needed your services!
3. Give your audience as many chances as possible to find you (SEO-riously)!
You know, that’s a serious enough reason to write a blog in itself. People may really not know they even need your services yet, because they’re focused on solving a specific pain point right now. If your blog post directly addresses and solves the problem they’re having, you’ve become a helpful part of their business journey and have established a yourself as a knowledgable resource – potentially leading to a potential sale down the road! This all ties into proper SEO.
If you’re writing a blog, you have to help those pesky algorithms help you. Use the right words to trigger a pop-up in someone’s search! Consider what your ideal client/customer is searching online, and play into those topics so you become a part of the conversation. + Having key words as titles or headlines gives them some bonus SEO power!
Be relevant, fresh and maybe even a little sassy to give your blog character and pizazz, but don’t forget to push the keywords that will put your blog on top in online searches. Post regularly with this in mind and you’ll see an uptick in your traffic.
4. Set your business apart
Having a designated space to talk about your passion and all things having to do with your unique way-of-doing things is key to building your online presence. Think of this as a fresh new way to revitalize anything about your business that might be feeling a little neglected or stale.
Instead of getting stuck in a sea of Facebook posts and the like, a blog takes away that element of tired content & endless comments and opens up even more doors that lead directly to you and your sweet, sweet offerings. Sharing blog posts is a great way to get people off an overcrowded social media platform and onto your website (only paying attention to what you have to say)!
Consistent blog posts will keep your business presented as informed, plugged into what is happening in your area-of-expertise, while also providing a personal, conversational touch to your business that has the potential to reach more people!
5. Social Media clarity
Say you don’t know what to post on your social platforms… Having a blog post that comes out once a week can be the saving grace you were looking for. Suddenly, you have something to talk about that is on-brand, relevant for your audience, and encourages people to visit your site!
Hello traffic spike!
6. Establish a resource bank
You can also use your blog almost like a resource library. For example, if I have potential clients come to me for branding that haven’t chosen an official business name, I simply lead them to my Name Your Biz blog post which breaks down how to decide on one and provides a free workbook to help them figure it out. By providing this free advice, I’ve helped a potential customer, warmed up a lead, and hopefully brought them that much closer to working with me!
Win, win for everyone!
It can also be a life savor when it comes to answering common questions you get as a business owner. If there are things about your process, deliverables, etc. that are tricky for new comers to grasp, blog about it so you can refer people to that post rather than send over the same answer again and again.
This has been hugely helpful for me with my File Types 101 post, where I lay out how to utilize brand assets from a designer. My clients now have a go-to resource if questions ever arise after working together, and I’m not having to field questions about file types!
Work smarter, not harder, my friends!
7. Nail that first impression
Typically blog posts are stumbled upon by readers through searches (Google, Pinterest, etc.) and it may be the first experience he/she has with your brand and business. What’s that first impression going to be? Is your blog easy to navigate? Encouraging visitors to browse through posts and engage with your content? Is your stuff recognizable? Your thumbnails and graphics need to stand out among the sea of other online resources.
You already have a beautifully branded website and irresistible services all prepped and looking like a dream, right? Well, your blog has to reflect exactly that! Don’t just post some lame, cut and dry manifesto. Use your blog as a tool to speak directly to YOUR people. Keeping things conversational relieves some of the pressure of ‘needing everything to be perfect’, plus it helps to establish a more personal connection with readers.
Putting character into your blog doesn’t just have to be in the words, either. Visuals, pictures, art, imagery, colors, fonts… it should all work together to give a clear and memorable peek into what your brand & business is all about.
